After my last job upgrade, I got my own office. Though I did have someone else living it with me, another employee who held the same title, I was still thrilled to have it.
But after around 4 weeks, I was considering leaving and pursuing a business opportunity from home instead. This was due to my supervisor’s demand that I lessen time on the phone with my kids. That was not something I was comfortable with.
The strange thing was that he shouldn’t have been privy to those conversations since I used my own cell phone. There could only be two explanations. One was that my colleague informed our boss about it. The other was that our office was wired.

You want to hear how he or she build a business from scratch and not because they are internet marketing experts. I know exactly what you mean.
So a little bit about us. My wife Kerry and I really are the couple next door. We are not gurus. We are just two people who happened to get into internet marketing by accident. We stumbled upon the secret to creating information products that are very profitable, require little time, and give us tremendous amounts of freedom. I am a poster child for somebody who started an internet company late in life. I did not start this thing until I was in my 40s. Online Business Idea #1 – Start With What You Know
The truth is that if we can do it, you can, too. Like I said, I have not always had an online business. For 20 years, I did home remodeling. Then my wife started up a little company called Curriculum Connection. She wanted to help other homeschoolers find curriculum to use. As it grew, she began asking me, “Steve, do you know how to build web pages? How can we get online with our products?” So I started working on it, and even though I was clueless at first, I quickly figured it out. At the same time, I was in seminary.
So I was 2000 miles from home. No friends, no family, and no job. And I had to replace that remodeler income it took me 20 years to build. I had to replace it fast. And I had to do all of this in my part-time because seminary required me to read 15,000 pages a year!
So I started looking for the perfect business. And the reason I tell you this story is to say, “I know you are busy. I know you probably have a full-time job. I know that you are experiencing the same things I was experiencing. But you can start an online business on the side in your part time, and pretty soon, if you work it right, it will eclipse your day job.”
Online Business Idea #2 – Write Out Your Expectations
So I sat down and wrote out my expectations for my perfect business. I wanted to create a product one time and then get paid for it repeatedly. I only had a small amount of time to work each week, so I needed to be paid well in that time. I needed a product that was easy for me, my wife, and my partners if I ever had any. I really wanted a business that would run automatically with very little input from me. I was looking for a weekly, even monthly, paycheck. I also wanted very few start-up costs. Sounds realistic, right?
You might say I had unrealistic expectations. But think about it. There is a business that would meet all my needs: creating and selling information products online. Once you have created it, you can sell it over and over again.
You start off by spending a little time packaging quality content, market it on the internet, and then sell it quickly and painlessly. You really could almost put the whole thing on auto pilot.
Online Business Idea #3 – Start Small
It was very low start-up costs. In fact, that is one of the questions I am routinely asked. “Steve, how much does it cost to start an online business?” For $15 a year for a domain name, and that is kind of high these days, and $50 a year for hosting, and $20 a month for an autoresponder, you can set up an online business. And that is really all it takes to get started.

One of the biggest challenges which any home based business is faced with is generating targeted traffic. While there are in fact many free ways to generate the targeted traffic which is desired, they are not as readily apparent as one would hope. Others come to the conclusion that the traffic which they seek is too costly, leaving them with a very slim profit margin, if any. This is something which several online marketers often struggle with, and is often the reason why they end up abandoning their home based business.
Hence, it is apparent that if you can send a steady flow of targeted visitors to your website, your home based business should do very well. Unfortunately, most online marketers never clear this hurdle. Much of the time it is because they are unwilling to put forth the requisite effort, or conduct the necessary research to obtain such traffic. However, if you are willing to do the research and put forth the effort, you will get the traffic that you desire. Once you have gotten to this stage, you will make sales and generate a profit.
With that being said, there are several ways to direct targeted traffic to your website. The thing that you must keep in mind is that there is not magic traffic button that you can just push. You are going to have to put forth some time and effort. For example, one of the best steps any home based business owner can take, is optimizing their website for the search engines. This is commonly referred to as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short. SEO puts your website in a position to rank well in the search engines, thus driving targeted traffic to your website. However, SEO takes time and consistency. No one can get to the first page of the search engines for competitive key phrases overnight. Often times it takes 6-12 months or more to achieve such rankings. This might be a problem for the home based business owner who is willing to put forth the effort, but from a monetary standpoint, does not have 6-12 months to wait for targeted visitors. Fortunately, there are some solutions. We will discuss such solutions below.
For starters, I am going to begin with what I view as the number one solution. I rate this solution as number one because it serves a dual purpose. First, it enables you to direct targeted traffic to your website immediately. Secondly, it is a key strategy in enabling your website to rank prominently in the search engines. This strategy is what is know as article marketing. Essentially, article marketing involves composing articles which contain valuable information for your target market, the submitting these articles to several article directories and niche blogs. The reason why you will receive instant targeted traffic to your website, is because the article directories receive a high volume of traffic. Each article that you submit to the directories will include a link back to your website. Thus, readers will click this link to be taken to your website. As you may know, the search engines rank websites in large part because of the number of links which point to the website. Each article contains a new link to your website, giving it link value in the search engines.
Another method which provides similar benefits to article marketing is what is known as social media marketing. This method involves submitting your writings to social bookmarking and social networking websites such as Reddit, Delicious, Mister Wong, Propeller, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, Google Bookmarks, etc. Taking such steps provide you with targeted traffic to your website, one way links, as well as the branding as an expert in your field. Just make sure that what you are bookmarking is of value to your niche market, and you are not purely spamming for self serving purposes.
The truth is that you have several options which will enable you to drive traffic to your home based business. The key here is to not just seek any traffic, but rather targeted traffic. This will require that you recognize the niche market which you home based business caters to from the outset. Once you identify this market, show them how they will benefit from what you have to offer.
